Ikonen is a shifty forward with an excellent heavy release. He has great hockey sense, reads and anticipates the plays which lead to his ability to be patient. He’s a dual-threat either from below the goal line with his good agility and puck protection or from the tops of the circle with his wicked release. He owns a high-end release whether it be a quick wrister in stride or a clapper from a standstill that can cleanly beat goaltenders. Ikonen has great stickhandling abilities with a wide variety of tricks, he’s quick and shifty to get in and out of traffic. He’s a firm playmaker who uses his tremendous vision to pick out teammates in high danger positions or to facilitate a set play on the powerplay. Overall he is a good skater with slightly above average straight-line speed but a great skating stride and edge work that contribute to his deceptive acceleration. Ikonen will have to work on his defensive game and play without the puck, especially own zone positioning.

“Ikonen is a dynamic playmaker with top line upside who excels in all three zones. He’s an inside player willing to take whatever punishment awaits as he dangles and spins his way into the tough scoring areas. Ikonen has excellent balance and is a strong puck carrier who can make high-percentage plays either off the rush or after collecting loose pucks during board battles. When the puck is on his stick, you get a sense that he wants to be in command and dictate the tempo, especially on the power play. Ikonen is both fast and incredibly shifty, going full bore to hunt down pucks off the forecheck and stopping on a dime with his head up. He’s a strong competitor and is the last kid looking for a line change as his motor enables him to maintain the same compete level from the beginning of a shift to the very end. He has an excellent shot with a quick release and is capable of being more than just a pass-first pivot.” – Steve Kournianos (The Draft Analyst)

“A fast and mobile center. Ikonen has good top speed, although not elite, with good balance and control…A good goal scorer that can score from distance. He has a dangerous one timer and he can be used well both at the point and in the slot on the power play…Ikonen has very good puck control and can showcase nice creative moves with the puck…” – Jimmy Hamrin (McKeen’s Hockey)

“One of his best assets is his wrist shot. He masks his release well which makes his shot deceptive and he has a knack for getting it through traffic. It’s not always the most powerful of shots, but he gets it on goal quickly and that is often enough to fool the goalies. Aside from having strong hand-eye-coordination he also has good foot-coordination as well, as he loves to bring the puck along with his skate and makes it look smooth and effortless.” – Aaron Vickers (Future Considerations)
